Inspired Design
My first inkling that Interior Design would become a passion of mine occurred back in 1987 when, as a twenty-two-year-old newlywed, I went to see a thriller, Fatal Attraction, the weekend it opened, and though the film was taut with frightening twists and turns, I found myself distracted by Michael Douglas' character's NYC apartment and even more, by the upstate home he moves his family into. Boiling bunny? What boiling bunny?? I was taken over by the dark-hued Country Kitchen walls; something I had never seen before. Years later whilst Charlie and I were raising our children, if we had a heated family dispute - even if it stemmed from my grievance - I would get pulled from the fight by something I saw around the room and wanted to change: a color I thought I might like to try, a ceiling fixture, etc. -- to the extent I no longer remembered what I was fighting for!
What defines a seasoned-Dani living space? I lean toward the timeless - one can never go wrong with timelessness - but wrapped in whimsy and the unexpected. Every room must have its own distinct personality, yet there is a common - deliberate - thread linking the entire home together, almost like a scavenger hunt, so that the whole house flows. Bold color, pops of animation; open; soulful; warm and lively, all the while utterly harmonious. I let my intuition be my guide when I design, not knowing just how the space will come together, but certain it will. This is where it gets fun!
